Highlighting Denver Authors: Calvin B. Fisher

Part of Calvin B. Fisher’s routine is to write in the mornings, before he heads to his job as a software engineer for a company based in Denver.

Fisher, a resident of Glendale, is originally from the Midwest and moved to Colorado to attend the University of Denver, where he earned a degree with a double major in English and applied computing.

He has been writing novels for about a decade, beginning when he was still in high school.

Fisher enjoys writing because it “brings fresh, new ideas to readers they haven’t experienced before,” he said. Reading “helps people process and unwind in our hectic, day-to-day lives.”

Fisher self-published his first book in 2020. This book caught the attention of Headline Books, and the publisher re-published it as “Apocalypse Bounty” in fall 2021. It is the first book of The Northfield Saga, which is a planned four-book series. The second book, “Stormrise,” is expected to come out this fall.

The Northfield Saga is a sci-fi set in a post-apocalyptic world. It follows Mark Northfield, a mercenary who is trying his best to remain a good person in a dark world.

Fisher invests a lot into the characters of the story, and said one of The Northfield Saga’s main draws is Mark Northfield, for his personality and the interesting people he meets.

“One of the best parts about reading fiction is forging a relationship with the characters,” Fisher said. Mark Northfield “resonates with people.”

Q&A with Calvin B. Fisher

What do you hope readers get out of reading your book(s)?

One of the best joys I’ve found in fiction is sharing a journey with characters. When characters are compelling or likable, their struggles and triumphs mean a lot more to the reader. The story as a whole is something the reader forms a deeper connection with. I hope, when readers walk away, they take a small piece of Mark Northfield’s heart with them.

Do you believe people can relate to the characters in your book(s)? If so, in what ways and why?

The characters are the most important part of the Northfield Saga, even more than the post apocalyptic world or plot. Mark Northfield is a character people can relate to because he wears his heart on his sleeve. Above all else, he has a genuine heart, and a gentleness that conflicts with the rough world he lives in. Everyone can relate to that feeling of not quite belonging somewhere.

What’s next?

There is a lot more to come. The Northfield Saga still has two more books to go, so Mark Northfield’s journey continues. I have a set of stories planned past that, but nothing I’m ready to reveal quite yet.

Where to get the books

The most direct way to obtain the first two books in Fisher’s The Northfield Saga series is through his website: calvinfishermedia.com.
