ONCE A POLLUTED WATERWAY NOT welcoming TO AQUATIC life OR HUMAN recreation, THE SOUTH PLATTE RIVER now yields impressive hauls for local fishermen, and welcomes kayakers and other water sport fans to ever increasing stretches, due to a four-decade effort spearheaded by The Greenway Foundation and numerous government agencies. Presently, $24.5 million of projects are under way to further enhance an 11-mile portion of the Platte within Denver borders, that will return the river channel and banks to improved ecological function, upgrade the river trail system and create additional parkland for educational and sporting endeavors.
