I read a letter to the editor last week claiming there was no fraud in mail-in voting. While that may be so, I have had personal experience with some deficiencies in our process that could allow for it.

My wife passed away in mid-January 2010. Her death was reported to the Social Security Administration and I went down to the Douglas County offices in Castle Rock to do the same about a month after her passing. At that time I filed an official death certificate with Douglas County.

Later on that year in October, 10 months later, I received a mail-in ballot from the county for her to vote. I was baffled that even after 10 months her passing had not been processed by election officials to remove her from the current voter rolls. How widespread was this problem? I don't know but it did happen.

Vote by mail and verifying voter status are not mutually exclusive choices. I like voting by mail much better than standing in line, but it needs to be a verified and reliable process. Asking voters to verify their address, identity, or status is not a hardship when today any doctor, dentist, DMV office or liquor store will ask for the same verification.

Voting by mail is fine, just keep it current, correct, and annually verified.
