We have much to boast about at South. With an increase in our enrollment, we are excited to see South High School becoming one of the best schools in Denver! The increase comes from the greater Wash Park neighborhood as well as students from other Denver neighborhoods who are choosing South. Our reputation for inclusivity and excellence is spreading!
South’s Class of 2016 are recipients of numerous prestigious local and national scholarships, including:
- Daniels Fund Scholarships.
- A Dell Foundation Scholarship.
- A Boettcher Scholarship.
- The Denver South Retired Teachers Scholarship.
- The Sean Lough Foundation Scholarship.
- National Merit Scholarships.
- A Denver Scholarship Foundation Scholarship.
- Gear Up Scholarships.
- Gates Millennium Scholarship.
Our 300 seniors have earned an impressive $8 million in academic awards!
Of course, other students keep shining at South, too. Our French students have been recognized at the national level with first, second and third-place finishes in the National French competition! Not to be outshined, Our JROTC earned 400 points out of a possible 400 for their annual review! Additionally, over 25 students earned the Seal of Biliteracy.
The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, school district, county office of education or state in recognition of students who have attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The seal appears on the diploma of the graduating senior and is a statement of accomplishment for future employers and college admissions.
South staff also continue to receive recognitions and awards.
The South High algebra faculty were nominated for the Excellence in Team Award, which is a part of the DPS Honors recognition program.
Our own Fernando Pabon-Ferro is a member of the district’s Seal of Biliteracy Team, and members of this team were also nominated for the Excellence in Team Award.
Congratulations to these members of the South High School family! We are proud of your commitment to academic excellence and the students at South!
As ever, our athletic spring season featured a number of stellar performances:
- Boys swimming: the team has made their presence known, finishing 9th overall in the 4A classification at the state championships.
- Coed track and field: our boys track team again participated in the Colorado State Track and Field Championships. This year our team featured some of the best sprinters and relayers in Colorado. The girls track team also finished with great performances at the state level for the first time in a number of years.
To summarize, South is rising to the very top! Our academics and athletics are of the highest caliber in the state. And, as we welcome Mrs. Jennifer Hanson, our new principal for the 2016-2017 school year, we know that greater heights are to come.
