With April showers come May flowers, and the Denver South community will be no exception. Between seniors receiving college acceptance letters and scholarship offers from both near and far to students excelling in a myriad of activities, the “blooms” at Denver South will prove to be outstanding in May 2016.
Many of this year’s seniors next year will be headed to institutions of higher learning all over the country, some with recognition for their academic prowess. The class of 2016 is proud of both Minh Diep and Isaiah Barnes for their receipt of Daniels Scholarships. That pride of course also extends to Neema Sherif, who was awarded a Dell Scholarship; Leah Crawford, the proud recipient of both a Boettcher and the Retired Teachers Scholarship; and Juan Sanchez, who was recognized as a Gates Millennium Scholar.
Students also were recognized at the state level for their involvement in FBLA competition and Colorado District National Speech Championships and by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City for their role on the Denver Branch Student Board of Directors. Also, South calculus students took first place in their first round of twelve teams.
As ever, South’s student athletes bring their Rebel pride to both the playing field and the classroom. This year we have 232 honor athletes (all with a 3.5 GPA or higher).
On the track, Denver South boasts several athletes ranked in the top 20 within the state. In the pool, boys swimming is breaking records both in and out of DPS and is ranked fourth in the state in the 200 freestyle relay and first in both 50 and 100 freestyle.
Rebel artists too continue earning recognition. Some garnered district-wide attention thanks to the Wellington Webb Building’s April show of student art composed of various media. Within Denver South High School the establishment of a new permanent art collection will ensure a legacy. Finalists are on display in the hallways and will be part of the upcoming Student Art Exhibit set to take place on Thursday, May 5, at 5:30p.m. in room 105.
That same evening, the Denver South Choir Showcase will take place at 6:30p.m. in the auditorium and will feature all-school choirs as well as those students who auditioned for the South’s Got Talent initiative. Choral whetted your appetite for some Rebel music? Plan on being at Denver South High School the evening of May 12 at 6:30p.m. in the auditorium for performances by both percussion and guitar ensembles.
For the foodies out there the Food Truck Festival will be in full effect May 14 from 11:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. and will feature live music, games, tours of both the clock tower and alumni museum and a community service project hosted by A Little Help (please contact them at 720-242-9032).
Lastly, summer athletic camps abound at Denver South. The soccer program hosts its third annual youth camp June 8-10. For more information contact Kenny Woods at denversouthgirlssoccer@gmail.com.
